Pointspread Betting History on the Superbowl
Superbowl odds tend to have the favorite and the over heavily favored.
Superbowl odds have the total as one of the highest of the entire NFL season. Most of the time NFL playoff games are low scoring but that has not always been the case in the Super Bowl. Recent Super Bowls have started to buck the trend of high scoring games but Superbowl odds are still set high.
As you look at picking a side in Superbowl betting you must start by looking at the favorite. Usually in NFL betting you start by looking at the underdog but not with Superbowl betting. The last two Super Bowls have seen the favorite cover the Superbowl odds. Overall the NFC holds a slight 21-20 edge and is also 21-17-3 against the Superbowl betting pointspread.
Recent history though shows the AFC has dominated the Superbowl betting pointspread. The biggest win by any team in Super Bowl history was in 1990 as San Francisco defeated Denver 55-10. The AFCs largest margin of victory was in Super Bowl XXXV when Baltimore beat the New York Giants 34-7.
The public automatically likes to bet the favorite and over and in the Super Bowl it has actually worked although the last three Super Bowls have started to reverse that trend.
Super Bowl betting angles show that the Giants are 5-0 ATS in their last five games vs. a team with a winning record. Another Super Bowl betting angle shows that the Giants are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 playoff games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
Super Bowl betting angles show that New England is 13-6 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Patriots are 40-19-3 ATS in their last 62 games on grass. The Patriots have struggled of late against the spread going 0-5 in their last five games.
If you are considering the total in Super Bowl betting keep in mind that the Under is 4-1 in the Giants last 5 playoff games. The Under is 4-1-1 in the Patriots last six games overall and the Under is 13-5-1 in the Patriots last 19 playoff games.
Super Bowl betting angles show that New York and New England have split their last four games with the Giants covering three of the four. How is New York as a big underdog? They are 7-6 ATS as an underdog of 10 points or more and will be getting nearly two touchdowns in this years Super Bowl betting odds.
Here are some other Super Bowl betting angles to consider. The Giants are 13-6 ATS in their last 19 games played against teams from the AFC East. The Patriots are 1-4 in their Super Bowl history against the spread although they are 3-2 straight up, having won their last three Super Bowl appearances.
The Patriots are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games when the total was 49 or more. Keep in mind that the last two Super Bowl games have seen the favorite cover the Super Bowl betting pointspread and the game go under the total.
Super Bowl betting angles are always interesting to look at and sometimes they can point us in the direction of a winner. Enjoy the Super Bowl this year and keep some of these angles in mind.
Good Luck, see you at the pay window
